Finding Your Web Presence
63A Message for Our Friends … Present and Future
Everyone has a story, a message they would love for people to hear. Though the reasons why may vary, the desire to deliver the message runs deep in all of us.
Where it is often easy to tell the story to those we know and communicate with on a regular basis, we realize that there are scores of others that may also benefit from the message. But how?
In historic times, it was common to have those stories relayed to distant ears by travelers and story-tellers who wandered across the lands.
In the recent past the mass media outlets (print, radio, TV) provided a new vehicle to even more effectively “spread the word” and usually with more accuracy than the historic word of mouth campaigns.
Today we are blessed with yet another story delivery outlet that not only reaches to nearly every nock and cranny of the Globe but can do so in a virtual instant with just a click of a button …. the Internet!
The phenomenal outreach of the WWW inspires the story-teller in all of us with the appeal of delivering that story to the hundreds of millions of daily Web visitors. Many of the the “Net” surfers are looking for the key elements contained in each of our tales often seeking solutions to their problems.
So off we go, ready to spin our yarn onto the digital fiber-ways for all those like-minded surfers to read and ponder. Only after laboring over the keyboard and pushing our story forward do we find our words of wisdom drowned out by the clattering of keys and clicking of mice by the same masses we strive to reach.
Are there one or two Net users?
So Many Eyes … Yet No One Reads …..
I heard a rumor recently that there are quite a few people that use the Internet each day. Well, it’s more than a rumor actually; there are statistics of Internet use compiled but such trust-worthy sources as Nielsen/NetRatings, International Telecommunications Union and so forth to support that rumor.
Based on information reported at www.internetworldstats.com, nearly 22% of the Global population (~ 6.76 billion) or approximately 1.46 billion people periodically surf the Internet. That’s definitely more than a handful!
So why then if you rush out and publish your yarn on your blog, your very own website or even many article submission sites, do your words of wisdom often remain un-noticed?
This might be another case of the aged-old problem of the missing “LINK”. Plus the fact that there are also several million competing stories on other websites that dilute your presence; your “Web Presence” that is.
So How Do You Market Your Web Presence?
At this point, the basic problem is that we are the proverbial “needle in the haystack” amongst all the other messages with a similar tone. The goal, therefore, is to become haystack in a field of hay!
Let’s stop for a moment and think of this from the perspective of Elliot in the movie, “E.T.” after watching the short video clip.
During the movie, Elliot uses “Reese’s Pieces” to lay a trail that E.T. can follow back to Elliot. O.K., so what does this have to do with our story getting noticed on the “Web”.
Think of it this way. In this analogy, Elliot is laying out a series of stories (Reese’s Pieces) so that E.T. (our readers in the proverbial haystack of the Web) can track it back to find Elliot.
You see, Elliot realizes that in order to lure the visitor to his house, he has to leave the Reese’s Pieces trail for E.T. to follow and to be successfully heard (or read) via the Web, we have to do the same …. or at least something very similar.
For us to be successful delivering our message to potential readers on the Web, we must also leave a trail, in our case it’s a trail of messages that becomes our “web of content”.
By developing a web of stories dispersed via blogs, Hubs, articles, lenses, videos and the like and laying them out in a trail (by using keywords and links), we can also emulate Elliot and help bring E.T. (our new readers) home …..

Hi Jim,
Great metaphor...I like it when marketers use real stories to make their point especially when the story isn't necessarily related to something within the industry. The point you're making, about leaving a trail, is spot on.
In terms of giving advice to others, I think this is the big picture to always keep in mind. As so many people get lost in the details. I suggest a reverse engineering approach. So start with one's capture pages and move backwards...to the blog...to the content sharing sites (like this one)...etc.
Nice work. Stories are better than facts, nothing like a story to reign in the truth.

Nice hub ! thanks for sharing :)
Very nicely put. It is a struggle competing with the several million other stories on the web, but if we keep laying out breadcrumbs, we might just become the haystack in a field of hay. :)
